Profile
Founded in 1856, Mars Hill College is the oldest educational institution in western North Carolina. A private liberal arts college affiliated with the Baptist community, the college has a student body of about 1,100. About 60 percent of the students are North Carolina residents with the remainder from other East Coast states. Some 80 percent of students live on campus. Seven percent of the student body are international students.
The 30 major buildings include the solar-heated Harris Media Center, Founders Hall, built in 1892, the Moore Auditorium and Fine Arts Building, featuring an 1,800-seat auditorium with a pipe organ, and the Renfro Library. Athletic facilities include playing fields, tennis and racquetball courts, an indoor swimming pool, and a new fitness trail. ISEP participants are eligible to work on the student newspaper and arts journal.
Location
The 180-acre campus is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, near Mt. Mitchel, the tallest mountain peak in the eastern United States, and close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The area is known for its flowering dogwood trees and wilderness areas. Skiing, hiking, whitewater rafting and mountain biking are available near the campus. The town of Mars Hill is a pleasant, relatively safe community located 17 miles from Asheville, a city of 63,000. Asheville is an attractive historic city, home of author Thomas Wolfe, known for its Art Deco and Victorian architecture, and site of the grand estate, Biltmore House. It is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the US.
