China Summer Service Learning Program: Combating Poverty in Rural China Program Details: The SSLP brings Chinese and American undergraduates together to combat poverty issues in rural China. U.S. participants will attend an orientation program at Tsinghua University in Beijing to meet their Chinese partners, learn about Chinese culture and poverty alleviation issues, and develop plans to implement their service projects. Participants will then travel to their sites in rural areas throughout China where they will reside for two to three weeks. Each group will consist of approximately 1-2 U.S. students and 5 Chinese students. All Chinese participants speak English, and Chinese knowledge is not a requirement for U.S. student participation. Northern Nature and Environment Studies Program Details: This program, arranged by the Faculty of Science, provides a solid introduction to the northern ecosystems and their functioning, and the fauna, flora, vegetation as well as physical and human geography of Finland and Northern Scandinavia. Presenting man and Nordic geography, nature and its biodiversity, and genetic adaptation to the north, the program consists of lectures, courses and seminars held in Oulu and field course arranged at the University's biological stations in Northern Finland. In summer various field courses teach the identification of plants and animals in their natural habitats. The botany and zoology field courses take place in two different centres: one just outside Oulu on the Island of Hailuoto; and one at the Oulanka Research Station, situated in the Oulanka National Park close to the Finnish-Russian border and about 20 km south of the Arctic Circle. On the field courses students are accommodated in the comfortable quarters of the field stations and they can take full advantage of the opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside. Buddhism and Thai Society Location: Thammasat University is centered on a compact campus that was formerly the viceroy’s palace grounds on the Chao Phrya River - near the center of the original Bangkok. Program Details: Four week program designed for a small group of international students interested in Buddhism and Asian Studies. Ulster and Ireland: History, Cultures, Identities. A great course for anyone interested in Peace Studies or Irish history and the arts. Location: Students spend the first week of the program in cosmopolitan Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital city. A historical cathedral district neighbors university buildings, while in the student quarter to the south, the atmosphere is young and vibrant. Easily explored by foot, Belfast is trendy and artistic, offering a wide variety of social and cultural activities. For the remainder of the program, students are based at Magee College, located in the city of Londonderry (or “Derry”). One of the oldest and most historically interesting cities in Northern Ireland, Derry has much to do, from walking the historical walls and learning about The Troubles to great shopping, pubs, and nightlife. County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, noted for its rugged terrain, beaches, and breathtaking scenery, is also close by. Program Details: In this dynamic cultural immersion course, students explore the many facets of Northern Ireland’s heritage and identity. During the intensive program of lectures, seminars, and cultural events, participants engage with topics such as the history and politics of Northern Ireland and Ulster, The Troubles and peace process, Celtic folklore and mythology, Irish identity in the arts (poetry, literature, drama, design, film, and music), and more. Many of the lectures and discussions are led by some of Northern Ireland’s most celebrated writers, artists, and academics, so students are sure to benefit from their expertise. Program Details Five-week Brazilian Language, History and Culture. Students will attend 4-hour classes in the afternoon, from Monday to Friday. The program includes weekly cultural activities: a Brazilian Cooking class, a Jewelry Workshop, two Literature Classes, and a tour of Downtown Sao Paulo. Subjects 1. The study of the Portuguese Language; 2. History, Geography and Brazilian Culture; 3. Introduction to Brazilian and Portuguese Literatures Brazilian Cooking Class: students learn about our vast Brazilian menu and prepare some of our typical dishes with professional chiefs. Chambéry is an average-size town located at an important crossroads in the heart of the French Alps. It is about three hours from Paris and the Mediterranean coast. Tourists enjoy the area for its Alpine and cross-country skiing and water sports. It is well connected to major French and European cities by high speed train, the TGV. Technische Universität Braunschweig - EHistorical and current perspectives in culture, politics and the economy Location: The University of Marburg is one of the oldest German universities. In 1527, as part of the Reformation, 23-year-old Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous founded the university as the first Protestant university. With about 19,300 students and 7,500 staff members, it is one of Germany’s medium-sized universities. Program Details: Seminars area taught in German, English and Russian in the following areas of study: Political Science, Economics, and Cultural Studies. Each seminar (18 hours) lasts two weeks. You can enroll in up to four seminars. You can choose to enroll only in English classes, only in German classes, or in German and English classes out of one module. Two seminars of your choice are covered in addition to the German language course by the program fee of the standard program. Courses and Credits: Upon successful completion of the courses you will be awarded the following ECTS points (European Credit Transfer System) by the University of Marburg. 6 weeks of intensive German language for beginner, intermediate or advanced Location: Technische Universität Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig. Braunschweig is a modern urban city in North Central Germany with a current population of 240,000 and a history rich in tradition. During the Middle Ages, Braunschweig was a member of the “Hanseatic League” and ranked as one of the most influential cities of its time: the city’s fine Romanesque and Gothic churches and Town Hall still bear witness to this great past. Today, Braunschweig is also a regional center for the arts and cultural heritage. The Technische Universität Braunschweig is, at 250 years, one of the oldest technical universities in Germany. Today, 13,000 students are enrolled in six faculties and 110 institutes. Description: The International Summer Program offers six weeks of intensive German language training at the basic, intermediate and advanced level. Students will have 24 hours of instruction in German per week, including 8 hours of cultural studies. Classes start at 8:30am and end at 2:30pm with a one-hour lunch break. You will be taught in small groups of 15-17 students. A tutor will be assigned to you to advise you on both academic and personal matters during the program.
