Students who wish to improve their language skills or learn about a special academic subject in another country will benefit from ISEP Summer Programs. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis from March until May each year.
Some programs are offered as ISEP-Exchange while others are ISEP-Direct as denoted by the following symbols:
E - ISEP-Exchange available to US member students.
I - ISEP-Exchange available to students at International-to-International reciprocal members.
D - ISEP-Direct available to all US and International member and affiliate students.

AUSTRALIA

Australian Indigenous Studies Location: The Fraser Coast region is north of Brisbane and has a superb climate, calm waters, pristine beaches, and a relaxed lifestyle. Hervey Bay, which is excellent for outdoor activities, is also known as the whale watching capital of the world; humpback whales play in the Bay’s sheltered waters between August and November. Bordered by 40 kilometers of beautiful beaches, just offshore lies the World Heritage-listed Fraser island, the largest sand island in the world. Program Details: Students explore Australian Aboriginal culture, history, and knowledge. Through a combination of classroom learning and field experience in the Butchella community, students gain an understanding of historical and social contexts of contemporary indigenous Australians, key concepts relating to Aboriginal ways of life, local Butchella culture in the Hervey bay region, and the impact of colonialism on indigenous societies globally. Courses and Credits: Lectures, workshops, and assessment total 21 hours, and fieldwork totals 24 hours (usually 3 – 4 US credits, depending on the home institution’s policy). Housing and Meals: In Hervey bay, students stay at Next Backpackers in Torquay Beach. Room options include dormitories or twin rooms. In Fraser island, students camp in permanent tent structures. Summer Service Learning Program Location: This unique summer program starts with orientation in Beijing at Tsinghua University (“the M.I.T. of the East”). Then teams led by Tsinghua professors travel by train to remote areas of China to teach and conduct research. The program concludes with debriefing back in Beijing. Program Details: The Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP) in China brings together US and Tsinghua University students to live, learn, and work together on teams, providing critical education resources to the poorest regions of China. This low-cost, high-impact program enables hundreds of US and Tsinghua University students to learn about each other’s languages and cultures, practice global citizenship, and mitigate chronic poverty at the grassroots level. Courses and credits: Students will receive a certificate, NOT a transcript, for their participation. Any academic credit must be pre-arranged with the home institution (usually as an independent study). Check out this awesome video of the program! After Empire: The Collapse of Communism and Beyond Location and Program Details: The program provides visits to some of the most beautiful and historic cities in Estonia, Russia, and Ukraine. It includes one week in each country, with lectures in English by local professors on the challenges and effects of social, economic, and judicial reforms. Week 1 in Estonia. Lecture topics include the Soviet collapse from the Baltic perspective, the issue of a Russian-speaking minority, and Estonia and the European Union, among others. Trips to the Parliament and one of the largest commercial banks are part of the program. Students also visit museums, attend a performance, and take a tour of Tallinn. Week 2 in Ukraine. Lecture topics include the history of Ukraine to the present, the cultural identity of independent Ukraine, and challenges to the system of social protection and equity, among others. Meetings with Ukrainian politicians and foreign diplomats are included, as are a visit to Lavra Cave Monastery and an optional trip to Chernobyl. Week 3 in Russia. Lectures topics include Russian debate on globalization, Russian economic and institutional reforms, and Russian accession to WTO, among others. Also offered are meetings with officials at St. Petersburg City Government, a tour of an industrial factory and of St. Petersburg, a performance at Mariinsky Theatre, and an excursion to the Hermitage and Tsarskoye Selo. Courses and Credits: Students receive 6 ECTS credits (usually 3 US credits). Housing and Meals: During week 1, students stay in Tallinn at the Tallinn University of Technology Academic Hostel (2 people per room). In the Ukraine, students stay in a hotel. Summer School in Human Sciences Location: The university is located in the small but modern Finnish Lake District, where available activities include water sports and skiing. Finland is also well known for its natural beauty and high standard of living. Program Details: Established as a teacher training college in the 1860s, the University is top-ranked and characterized by a high level of technological sophistication, active international cooperation, and teaching. The summer program comprises 14 interdisciplinary courses for advanced undergraduate or graduate students. Northern Nature and Environmental Studies Location: Oulu is the largest and most important city in Northern Finland and the sixth largest city in the country. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the climate is surprisingly mild, and the summer months bring the unforgettable experience of the midnight sun — almost 24 hours of sunlight! Program Details: The Department of Biology offers this program for exchange students. Courses are taught in English. Seminars are held in Oulu, and the field courses are conducted at the University’s biological stations in Northern Finland. Various field courses teach the identification of plants and animals in their natural habitats. The botany and zoology field courses take place on the Island of Hailuoto and at the Oulanka Research Station in the Oulanka National Park, close to the Finnish–Russian border and about 20 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Courses and Credits: Students receive a total of 2 – 18.5 ECTS (usually 1 – 10.5 US credits) depending on their courses and length of stay. Field course options include Birds (2 ECTS / usually 1 US credit), Terrestrial Animals (4.5 ECTS, usually 2.5 US credits), Aquatic Animals (4 ECTS / usually 2 US credits), and Ecological Botany (8 ECTS / usually 5 US credits). Eligibility: The program is intended for students who have studied biology for two years or more. Housing and Meals: Students are housed in residence halls with a shared kitchen and bathroom on the Linnanmaa campus, about 6 kilometers from the center of Oulu. Bus connections are good, and housing is near grocery stores. Laundry facilities and saunas are also available. On field courses, students live in the comfortable quarters of the field stations. Intellectual Property law, Business in Biotechnology, and German Language Study Location: Founded by Ludwig V of Hessen-Darmstadt in 1607, the University now bears the name of one of its most renowned scientists, Justus Liebig. Many of the 23,000 students currently enrolled study applied sciences. Wetzlar (Goethe), Darmstadt, Marburg, and Frankfurt are easily accessible by train. Program Details: The interdisciplinary program covers business, health, law, ethics, and the natural sciences. All courses are taught in English by internationally renowned academics and scientists. Optional German language courses are taught at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students are assigned courses based on a language test conducted on the first day of class. Small classes guarantee intensive optimized learning. Excursions: The program includes study tours to biotech companies (internship opportunities available), as well as a 3-day study tour to various European Union and European Community institutions in Brussels, Belgium. Summer Engineering Internships and German Language Study Location: Hannover is the heart of a region of about 1.2 million people and is surrounded by numerous lakes and forests. The city itself offers many parks and idyllic gardens, which add to the city’s reputation for being a “green metropolis.” It also boasts an attractive mixture of historic and modern architecture, especially in the old city center and its modern shopping areas. Program Details: This program involves an individual study or research project that is suitable for engineering students in general, and mechanical engineering students in particular. Each student is matched with a supervisor in a research lab or institute and is integrated into the research team. The academic aspect of this program is enhanced by an introduction week, regular meetings, and follow-up sessions with supervisors and fellow participants. An interesting cultural program complements the academic work, and German student study buddies help participants settle in. The German language component entails an intensive German language class during the orientation week, followed by 8 hours of instruction per week. Eligibility: Junior-level standing. Excursions: The program offers affordable trips to cultural events during the week (e.g., cinema, theater) and places of interest during weekends (e.g., national parks, the North Sea, Hamburg, Bremen). Courses and Credits: The weekly workload includes 28 hours of research, 8 hours of language lessons, and 4 hours of roundtable seminars. Upon completion, students receive 6 ECTS (3 from the German language course). The transfer of credits depends on the home institution’s policies. Peace and Conflict: Near and Middle East - A European Perspective Location: The University of Marburg is one of the oldest German universities. In 1527, as part of the Reformation, 23-year-old Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous founded it as the first Protestant university. It currently has about 19,300 students and 7,500 staff members. Program Details: Classes are taught in German, English, and Russian in the following areas of study: political science, economics, and cultural studies. Each seminar (18 hours) lasts 2 weeks, and students can enroll in up to four classes taught in English, German, or a combination of German and English. The program fee covers two classes in addition to the German language course. Courses and Credits: The German language course is offered at the basic, intermediate, and advanced levels and taught in small groups (no more than 15) by highly qualified instructors of German. A short oral and written language test is given on the first day of classes to determine appropriate language placement. The German language course is worth 18 credit hours (3 ECTS), and the other classes are also worth 18 credit hours (3 ECTS). Program Details: During this 6-week summer term, the University of Hyderabad Study in India Program (SIP) emphasizes heritage, continuity, and change in India. Italian Business: Experiencing Italian Excellence Location: The historic city of Milan is the capital of Lombardy in the central Po valley, which is Italy’s richest, most populated and most economically active region. Milan is known as one of the world capitals of fashion and also hosts a wealth of monuments, palaces, churches, and museums. Program Details: ALTIS, the Postgraduate School of Business & Society at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, offers an international summer program for business students interested in acquiring direct knowledge and experience of Italian business expertise. The program, taught by both academic and professional experts, explores the Italian entrepreneurial system. Particular attention is paid to fashion and design, tourism, agribusiness, art, small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), industrial clusters, and entrepreneurship. Courses and Credits: The summer program offers 88 course hours (12 ECTS, 6 US credits). All courses are taught in English. The program is divided into two modules: Core business management course (44 contact hours): The European Union and Italian System, SMEs and Industrial Clusters, and Organization and Human Resource Management in SMEs. Thematic seminars (44 contact hours): Fashion and Design, Agribusiness, Tourism, and Art and Business. Program Details: Nation-Building and Development is a 4-week summer program consisting of lectures, group discussions, and field trips. 4-Week Buddhism and Asian Studies Program Location: Thammasat University is on a small campus that was formerly the viceroy’s palace grounds. It is located on the Chao Phrya River, near the center of the original Bangkok. The campus is close to some of Thailand’s most sacred temples, many government ministries, the Grand Palace, the National Theater, and the National Museum. Program Details: This 4-week program is designed for a small group of international students interested in Buddhism and Asian Studies. It focuses on the complex relationships among Buddhism and Thai history, politics, economics, education, literature, law, arts, and theater. Students are instructed by distinguished scholars and professors at Thammasat University and visit sites of particular historical importance. Excursions: On the weekends, students participate in field trips to temples, monasteries, museums, archaeological remains, palaces, and ethnic minority communities throughout Thailand. Opportunities are also provided to attend cultural performances of Thai theatre, dance, and music. Courses and Credits: Students take Society and Culture of Thailand (3 US credits) and Buddhism in Thailand (3 US credits). England's Cultural Heritage Location: Sunderland is located in northeast England, an area renowned for its history, culture, and beautiful countryside. It is home to numerous abbeys, castles, stately homes, and a picture perfect coastline. With a rich and fascinating heritage, it has a superb array of places of historical interest to explore, including the ancestral home of the first president of the United States, George Washington. Known as the “City by the Sea,” Sunderland also offers great shopping, entertainment, and nightlife. Program Details: This 3-week program focuses on local and regional history, literature, and culture. Students spend mornings in class and are free in the afternoons to study and explore the region. The curriculum also includes fieldtrips designed to bring to life the topics discussed in the classroom. These may include visits to York, Edinburgh, and Leeds; Hadrian’s Wall; and Alnwick Castle, which dates back to the 11th century and is featured as Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Orientation is also included, along with social activities such as welcome and farewell meals and evenings out to the theater or a local bowling alley. Courses and Credits: Grades are assessed through two essays, class participation, and a presentation. Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a transcript from the University of Sunderland (usually 4 – 5 US credits). Ulster and Ireland: History, Cultures, Identities Location: Students spend the first week of the program in cosmopolitan Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital city. A historical cathedral district neighbors university buildings, while in the student quarter to the south, the atmosphere is young and vibrant. Easily explored by foot, Belfast is trendy and artistic, offering a wide variety of social and cultural activities. For the remainder of the program, students are based at Magee College in Londonderry (“Derry”). One of the oldest and most historically interesting cities in Northern Ireland, Derry offers great shopping, pubs, and nightlife. Noted for its rugged terrain, beaches, and breathtaking scenery, County Donegal is also close by. Program Details: During lectures and cultural events, students engage with topics such as the history and politics of Northern Ireland and Ulster, the Troubles and peace process, Celtic folklore and mythology, Irish identity in the arts (poetry, literature, drama, design, film, and music), and more. Many of the classes are led by some of Northern Ireland’s most celebrated writers, artists, and academics. Periodic trips also supplement the curriculum and may include: • Tours of ancient sites such as Armagh and Navan Fort • Walking the Derry walls and a visit to Orangemen Parade • A visit to Stormont, the governmental estate for Northern Ireland • A trip to the Giant’s Causeway and the Causeway Coast • Hill-walking along the Sperrins • A visit to Enniskillen Castle • Tours of Upper and Lower Loch Erne, Grianán of Ailech, and Inishowen Peninsula. Both options provide students with opportunities to participate in tango lessons, horseback-riding lessons, and other cultural activities and excursions. Intensive Portuguese Language Study Location: The PUC-RIO campus is located in a preserved tropical rainforest by a quiet neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, a city famous for its natural beauty and cultural life. Program Details: This program aims to develop students’ skills in speaking, reading, and writing Portuguese in both formal and informal situations. Through immersion in the Brazilian culture with a true carioca experience, the program also prepares international students to attend regular university courses in all academic areas, including history, anthropology, literature, international relations, and engineering. Established 250 years ago, The Technische Universität Braunschweig is one of the oldest technical universities in Germany. Program Details: This international summer program offers 6 weeks of intensive German language training at the basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students have 24 hours of instruction in German per week, including 8 hours of cultural studies. Classes start at 8:30 am and end at 2:30 pm, with a 1-hour lunch break. Students are taught in small groups of 15 – 17 and assigned a tutor to advise on both academic and personal matters during the program. Located in the Yucatan Peninsula, Merida — “The White City” — is a perfect location to learn about Mexican culture and Mayan heritage. Program Details: UDEM offers 5 weeks of language and cultural studies that also incorporate community service!
