The Université de Savoie offers a seven-week immersion experience in the town of Chambéry, located in the heart of the French Alps. Through a combination of classroom learning and cultural activities, students study French, gain firsthand cultural experiences, and explore the delights of the Savoie region.

COURSES
A typical program includes 15 hours per week of small-group instruction, 3 hours per week of monitored language lab, and three workshops on aspects of local life (126 total hours of instruction, including lab; usually 5 – 6 US credits, depending on the home university’s transfer policy). Most afternoons include a comprehensive range of organized sporting or leisure activities. Sample syllabi can be found here

LANGUAGE NOTES
French language and culture courses are provided for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. No prior French language experience is necessary. Students are placed in appropriate language levels according to a placement exam taken before arrival. Note: The host institution ultimately determines your proficiency level and course eligibility.

HOUSING AND MEALS
Students stay in single rooms in double apartments in downtown Chambéry. Meals are not included, but a kitchen is available for use.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Past programs have included a welcome weekend tour of Chambéry and Savoie; a welcome cocktail party; and farewell dinner gala on le Lac Bourget.
Courses are organized to allow students to participate in a number of activities and excursions organized by the ISEFE. These activities are paid for by the student for a minimal price. Past activities have included hiking, canoeing, canyoning, bicycle trips through vineyards, museums, and mountain biking. Various excursions have been organized to different nearby towns including Geneva, Nice, Chamonix, Turin, and Lyon.
PROFILE
The ISEFE at the Université de Savoie specializes in teaching French as a foreign language to students from non-Francophone countries. Université de Savoie is a medium-sized university (12,000 students) with three campuses and great facilities.
LOCATION
Chambéry is located at an important crossroads in the heart of the French Alps, about three hours from Paris and the Mediterranean coast. Tourists enjoy the area for its Alpine and cross-country skiing as well as for its water sports. It is also well connected to major French and European cities by the high speed TGV train.
