Leiden University ISEP-Direct Programs 2008-2009
Several ISEP-Direct options exist through Leiden University. All Leiden University ISEP-Direct programs are tuition-only including the Leiden-Stellenbosch program. The university will help students make housing arrangements, but students are responsible for paying their rent and meeting the lease contract, as well as providing for their own meals.
After you are accepted to the program, Leiden University will contact you regarding housing arrangements. Your request for housing arrangements must be received at Leiden University before April 1st in order to guarantee housing.
2008-2009 ISEP-Direct Options and Program Fees
The costs listed below do not include the non-refundable application fee, ISEP student health insurance, housing, meals, passport or visa fees, and any administrative fees charged by the home institution.
Please note: In order to hold your ISEP-Direct placement, a $500 non-refundable program deposit is due within three weeks of your placement confirmation notice (PPAF), which you will receive from your ISEP Coordinator. The $500 deposit will be applied to the full program fee.
LEIDEN UNIVERSITY, THE NETHERLANDS

Spring Term Internships
The Faculty of Arts' Careers Center offers a number of internships for Study Abroad students in the Faculties of Arts, Liberal Arts, Archaeology, Theology and Philosophy. Whether you are spending a full year or only the spring term in Leiden, the Center can help you find a suitable placement and arrange internship interviews. All internships are supervised by a university lecturer and are part-time in conjunction with coursework.

LEIDEN - STELLENBOSCH PROGRAM
Societies in Transformation - Europe and South Africa: The program combines a semester of study at Leiden University, Netherlands, with a semester of study at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Both institutions offer courses taught in English as well as language courses in Dutch and Afrikaans, which are closely related.
During the first semester, at Leiden, students study the history and culture of Europe in general and the Netherlands in particular, explore contemporary Dutch and European society and attend an introductory session on South Africa.
During the second semester, at Stellenbosch, students choose courses in the history, culture, politics, and economics of South Africa (as well as others from the wide range of courses taught in English) and experience first-hand the profound changes transforming post-apartheid South Africa.

NANOSCIENCE: SHAPING A NEW WORLD, ATOM BY ATOM
The Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences at Leiden University and the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Delft University of Technology offer a variety of course modules around the themes of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This program fee is tuition-only (room and board not included). In case students need to travel to Delft for courses, a discount train card will be reimbursed.
Program objectives:
- mastery of general principles in physics, biology and chemistry with a role on the nanometer scale;
- insight into the materials and experimental techniques usable on the nanoscale and their limitations; and
- skills in the field of theoretical analysis, simulation, and modeling.
Program dates: 3-month certificate program (September to December, or January to June).

Requirements: Graduate or advanced undergraduate students of (Applied) Physics with a GPA of 3.2 or the equivalent; Non-native speakers of English must submit a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL 570 (230 CBT)
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES AND BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH OPTIONS
The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Leiden University Medical Center offers a module of 4 consecutive but related courses, built around the general principle of homeostasis with special emphasis on the interrelated fields of neuroscience and endocrinology.
Courses: Functional and Chemical Neuroanatomy, Clinical Research Methods, Hormones and the Nervous System, Communication in Science
Program dates: Biomedical Sciences (spring semester only; February to June); Biomedical Research (one or two semesters; dates depend on the chosen research project)
Language of instruction: English
Requirements: Both programs - Advanced undergraduate students; non-native English speakers must submit a minimum IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 570 (230 CBT)
Biomedical Sciences - applicants majoring in Biomedical Science, Pre-Med, Medicine, Biology or a closely related field
Biomedical Research - Practical laboratory work experience

All fees will be listed on the Participant Placement Acceptance Form (PPAF) and will not be adjusted after signature.
