Dictators, Revolutionaries, and New Democrats: Fifty Years in a Changing Central/Eastern Europe

SUMMER SNAPSHOT

Spend four weeks in Hungary experiencing Hungarian culture and learning about Central/Eastern Europe through the University of Debrecen. Hear local folk singing, travel to historic places in Slovakia and Romania, and meet leading figures. This exciting program offers a general survey of the political, economic, and cultural history of countries such as Russia, Poland, Romania, the former Czechoslovakia, and Hungary during the past 50 years. Optional Hungarian and Russian language courses are also available.

PROGRAM TYPE

ISEP-Direct Summer for all ISEP member students

COURSES

--In addition to the academic lectures and seminars taught in English in the morning, students will take either a language class (Hungarian or Russian) or Hungarian culture seminar in the afternoon (see below).

--The first two weeks of the program will be devoted to the history of the region. The second two will focus on the present situation in the country, with opportunities to meet local Hungarian politicians, lawmakers, and artists.

Examples of academic lectures and seminars:
Sovietization and communist dictators; the Cold War and the Soviet Bloc; Poland after 1945; Polish Catholicism and anti-soviet resistances; Romania after 1945; Hungary after 1945; effects of the Balkan Wars; from communist to western-type economic system; conflicts of privatization and re-privatization; social transformations and conflicts; poverty and wealth patterns for social gaps; new foreign policy directions; NATO and EC issues; post-Soviet societies in Central/Eastern Europe; social nostalgias and the theory of “uncompleted transformation”; globalization, new perspectives in the 21st century.

Structure of the Course:
--1 lecture (90 min) and 1 seminar (90 min) plus elective seminar (90 min) a day
–-examination offered at the end of the course

Credits:
Students must participate in all three course components and take the final exam in order to earn up to 12 ECTS credits. Final credit conversion is determined by the home university.

– registration: 22 July (Sunday), 14.00–18.00
– course starts on 23 July (Monday)
– excursions: 28 and 30 July, 4 and 11 August (Saturdays)
– departure: 18 August (Saturday), before 10.00

HOUSING AND MEALS

Students are housed in two-bedroom dormitories and receive a stipend for meals in university cafeterias.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Included in the program fee are:

--Evening programs include learning Hungarian folk songs and dances, tasting famous Hungarian wines, enjoying traditional Hungarian foods, watching excellent Hungarian films, and meetings with local politicians, lawmakers, artists, and various experts.

--On Saturdays, students will be taken to various historic places in Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania where they can meet leading figures of the neighboring countries.

PROFILE

The beautiful campus of the University of Debrecen is located in eastern Hungary. It has a student body of about 30,000 students. More than 1,700 instructors teach there, making it one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary. Its 15 faculties and 25 doctoral schools undoubtedly offer the widest choice of majors and other forms of training.

LOCATION

Just hours away from Budapest by train, Debrecen is situated near the border of Romania. Debrecen, the second largest city in Hungary, is located on the Great Hungarian Plain. It is the administrative, economic, educational, scientific, and cultural center of Eastern Hungary. The main campus of the university—with its numerous buildings, dormitories, sports fields, service center, park, and botanical garden—is a 10-minute tram ride or 30 minute walk from downtown, in area called Great Forest.
