Spend four weeks in Hungary experiencing Hungarian culture and learning about this unique country through the University of Debrecen. Hear local folk singing, travel to historic places giving you a glimpse of the past of Central Europe, and meet students and other enthusiasts of Hungary and its culture coming from more than 40 countries of the world. This exciting program offers a general survey of the political and cultural history of Hungary in the 19th and 20th centuries with the possibility of learning Hungarian on any level of your choice from beginner to advanced.

COURSES
--The first two weeks of the program will be devoted to the history of Hungary and Hungarian culture with lectures and seminars focusing on various topics. The course has been designed with special regard to those who (might) get into contact with Hungary or Central Europe. Based on the major turning points of the history of the country in the 19th-20th centuries, Modern Hungary provides a comprehensive portrait of the political and cultural events as well as persons and institutions of nearly two centuries.
--The second part of the program provides opportunities for studying Hungarian at a level of your choice: if you do not speak the language yet, you can join a beginners' course but if you have some background and/or experience in the Hungarian language , you will have a chance to improve your language skills in a group most appropriate for your knowledge.

Hungary during the Napoleonic Wars; The Reform Age in Hungary; Calvinism and Enlightenment; Revolution, Oppression and Compromise; The Dual Monarchy; Hungarian Romantic Art and Literature; Hungary in the Great War; The First Generation of Nyugat; Hungarian Painting in the First Half of the 20th Century; Hungary in World War II; The Hungarian Jewry in the 19th and 20th Centuries; Hungary after 1945; Literature under Communism; Hungarian Literature and Film in the 20th Century
Structure of the Course:
--3 blocks of classes (90 min each) a day
–-examinations offered at the end of both courses
Credits:
Students must participate in both course components and take two tests in order to earn up to 12 ECTS credits. Final credit conversion is determined by the home university.

– registration: 21 July (Sunday), 10.00–17.00
– course starts on 22 July (Monday)
– excursions: 27 July, 3 and 10 August (Saturdays)
– departure: 17 August (Saturday), before 10.00

HOUSING AND MEALS
Students are housed in two-bedroom dormitories and receive a stipend for meals in university cafeterias.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Included in the program fee are:
--Evening programs include learning Hungarian folk songs and dances, tasting famous Hungarian wines, enjoying traditional Hungarian foods, watching excellent Hungarian films, and meetings with local politicians, lawmakers, artists, and various experts.
--On Saturdays, students will be taken to various historic places in Hungary.
PROFILE
The beautiful campus of the University of Debrecen is located in eastern Hungary. It has a student body of about 30,000 students. More than 1,700 instructors teach there, making it one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary. Its 15 faculties and 25 doctoral schools undoubtedly offer the widest choice of majors and other forms of training.
LOCATION
Just hours away from Budapest by train, Debrecen is situated near the border of Romania. Debrecen, the second largest city in Hungary, is located on the Great Hungarian Plain. It is the administrative, economic, educational, scientific, and cultural center of Eastern Hungary. The main campus of the university—with its numerous buildings, dormitories, sports fields, service center, park, and botanical garden—is a 10-minute tram ride or 30-minute walk from downtown, in the area called Great Forest.
