SEVIS is an Internet-based method for tracking international students and scholars as well as their dependents while in the United States, and is maintained by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). All U.S. colleges and universities are required to use SEVIS to issue DS-2019s for J-1 students.
An additional requirement of SEVIS is that certain personal, academic,
and employment-related data on international students and scholars must
be reported to DHS. ISEP must report information on its sponsorship
of students electronically via the Internet to DHS.
ISEP is required to report the following to DHS:
- Student's and dependent's names and current U.S. address
- Student's enrollment at the institution
- Start date of student's next term
- Student's failure to enroll
- Termination of enrollment and reason for termination
- Dropping below a full course of study without prior authorization by the Responsible Officer (i.e. ISEP Central in Washington, DC, NOT the ISEP Coordinator on your host campus)
- Sources of funding
- Student's failure to maintain status or complete program
- Change of student's or dependent's legal name or U.S. address
- If the student graduates before the program end date listed on the DS-2019 form
- A change in student's major or program, or transfer to another university
- Any disciplinary action taken by the school against the student as a result of the student being convicted of a crime
Any change to the information listed above must be reported to ISEP immediately. ISEP has 21 days to report any changes in this information to DHS and the U.S. Department of State via SEVIS. All of this information will be transmitted electronically via the World Wide Web.
