In a very few cases, ISEP allows dependents to accompany the student
to the United States. For immigration purposes, dependents generally
receive J-2 status. You must advise ISEP at the time of application
if you wish to bring dependents, since many U.S. host institutions cannot
accept students with dependents.
It is important to remember that ISEP benefits will only be provided
for you. You will need to provide proof of sufficient financial means
to support dependents. It is your responsibility to purchase ISEP health
insurance coverage for all dependents.
J-2 dependents may apply to USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration
Services) for permission to work if the employment is needed only for
the support of the dependents and not needed for your support. Applications
for permission to work should be made to the regional office of the
USCIS having jurisdiction over the dependents' place of residence in
the United States. Permission for dependent employment is not automatic
and processing can take several months.
If your ISEP placement is extended, ISEP will review your situation
and determine whether authorization will be granted to extend your dependents.
For example, if it is apparent that you do not have the financial means
to support dependents, approval will not be granted for their extension.
