With over 135 universities to choose from in the USA, or even more countries if your university participates in International-to-International ISEP-Exchanges, you have a range of options! To find the site that is right for you, spend some time researching the different programs through the website. Carefully consider the factors below.
You might find it helpful to print this page as a guide while you begin research programs.
Factors to Consider
- Program Type – do you wish to study in the USA or in another country? Does your university participate in International-International ISEP-Exchanges? Would you consider a fee-paid ISEP-Direct program? See Programs and Costs for details.
- Academic Program – are there specific courses you need to take? US universities have course descriptions and information online, so be sure and research ahead of time.
- Language ability – do you speak another language or want to learn? Do you have the necessary TOEFL or alternative score to study in the USA? Students with TOEFL scores of 450 to 550 should consider USA ISEP-Direct.
- Type and size of institution – small institutions could offer more personal attention and small class sizes; large universities may have more course options.
- Location - major cities offer a lot of attractions, but it may be easier to meet people and feel at home in a medium-size city or smaller town. Consider transportation; many cities in the US do not have public transportation, but many campuses are a self-sustaining community of their own.
- Housing and meals - living with a family, in a student residence or in an apartment involves different levels of independence and integration. Are you comfortable sharing a room? Does the site you are interested in match you with a host country roommate or with another international student? Some US dormitories may have kitchens, some you must use meal plans in a cafeteria. Ask your Coordinator about the options available at the institutions you are considering.
- Financial considerations – how does your university’s policies for choosing ISEP-Exchange or ISEP-Direct affect your decision? What are the local costs of living for the city abroad? Also find out if housing deposits or other additional fees are required.
- Dates – check to make sure the program dates fit well with when you need to return to your home university.
- Length of study – while a full-year program may seem daunting, most students who go for a semester come back wishing they had stayed for a full-year.
Chances of exchange placement – some sites have less space available than others. See the Featured Programs for some sites that have a good chance of placement. See the Anticipated Openings for US sites. Several US sites are Restricted because they are selected by many more international students than the number of outgoing US students. You may list only one Restricted Site on your application, and it must be the first choice.
