You might find it helpful to print this page as a guide while you begin research programs.
Factors to Consider
- Program Type –Are you interested in studying in the United States or in another country? Does your university participate in International-to-International ISEP-Exchange? Would you prefer an ISEP-Exchange or an ISEP-Direct program? See Programs and Costs for details.
- Academic Program – Are the specific courses you need offered at the appropriate level? US universities have course descriptions and information online, so be sure and research ahead of time.
- Language ability – Do you speak another language or want to learn one? Do you meet the necessary language proficiency requirements? Check the list of US Language Requirements.
- Type and size of institution – Small institutions may offer more personal attention and small class sizes, whereas large universities may have more course options.
- Location - Major cities offer many attractions, but it may be easier to meet people and feel at home in a smaller town.
- Housing and meals - Living with a family, in a student residence, or in an apartment involves different levels of independence and integration. Carefully review the ‘Housing and Meals’ section of each university’s Membership Directory.
- Financial considerations –Check your university’s policies before choosing ISEP-Exchange or ISEP-Direct; also research the local cost of living and travel expenses.
- Dates – Check to make sure the program dates fit well with when you need to return to your home university.
- Length of study –While a full-year program may seem daunting, most students who go for a semester come back wishing they had stayed for a full-year.
- Chances of placement – Some sites have less space available than others. See the Featured Programs for some sites that have a good chance of placement. See the Anticipated Openings for US sites. Several US sites are Restricted because they are requested by many more international students than the number of outgoing US students. You may list only one Restricted Site on your application, and it must be the first choice.
