Study in Lappeenranta, Finland!

Lappeenranta, Finland, with a population of about 60,000, is an ideal place for students who want to experience the best of Northern Europe while enriching their studies with extremely knowledgeable professors and diverse courses. In the South Karelia Region in Finland, Lappeenranta is the administrative, commercial, and cultural center of Southeast Finland. It also has many nicknames, including the Town of Lindens, Cavalry Town, Gate to Lake Saimaa, and Gateway to the East to reflect its rich history. Lappeenranta is located on the southern shore of Lake Saimaa, which is Finland ’s largest lake.

In 1649, Queen Christina of Sweden signed the instrument of foundation, including an emblem, a savage, for the new town. The town received its Swedish name Villmanstrand ("wild man’s shore") from the savage figure in the emblem. In the Peace of Turku in 1743, Lappeenranta fell under Russian rule, nearly a hundred years before the rest of Finland. It wasn’t until 1811 that "old Finland" and the rest of Finland were reunited.

Founded in 1969, Lappeenranta University of Technology is a young and rapidly growing university with a firm international foothold in its areas of specialization. The rapid growth of technological know-how in the region is exemplified by numerous national research units and the Kareltek Technology Centre, a link between industry and technology in transferring the results of research and development.

The location of LUT, on the eastern border of the European Union and neighboring on Russia, has given the university a unique vantage point. The university is one of the leading sources of expertise in Finland on Russian issues, East-West trade and transitional economies.
