The University of Debrecen (UD) follows the Magna Charta of European universities in contributing to the development of universal science and Hungarian society by providing high-level interdisciplinary educational research and development activities. The University of Debrecen has a student body of 30,000, out of which 18,600 are full-time students. More than 1700 instructors teach at the University, making it one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary. Its 15 faculties and 25 doctoral schools undoubtedly offer the widest choice of majors and other forms of training.

An Outstanding Research University by the Numbers

UD has three centers (Agricultural, Medical, Arts and Sciences), several research institutions and 15 faculties, educating over 30,000 students. A national collectiing authority, UD’s central library is the second biggest in the country, with over 6 million volumes, and seven scientific libraries.

UD has earned international prestige in the fields of agricultural sciences, humanities, health sciences, law, economics, engineering, education, medical sciences, social sciences, natural sciences, and music.

1. Business and Economics Programs (at the bachelors or masters level)
Prepares students in the the fields of economics and business through courses in social sciences, applied economics, methodology and other offered specializations. Some of these specilizations inlcude international conflict and negotiation, marketing management, global problems and economic development, regional policies of the EU, economic policies of the EU. 2. Institute of English and North American Studies
There are four departments within IEAS, each specializing in an individual field of English and American studies (the Department of British Studies, the North American Department, the Department of English Linguistics, and the Department of English Language Learning and Teaching). Within these departments there is wide variety of focus areas for students to choose from including: American studies through the literatures and histories, English-language cultures, theoretical linguistics, film studies, applied linguistics, gender studies, EU-Studies, visual and popular culture, and the cultures of Ireland, Canada, and Australia. 3. Center of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences

Student Life

Debrecen Fountain

Lovarda is the biggest student center in Central Eastern Europe and is a dream come true for the 30,000 students of UD as well as for locals. Lovarda provides a perfect place for conferences, movie nights, fashion shows, exhibitions, and pop and classical music concerts. The built-in light and sound effects satisfy even the highest demands. In addition to the big performance hall, visitors can enjoy a bar, café, and restaurant on the first floor. On the second floor, guests are welcome to relax in the pool hall. The 50 square meter rooms on the ground floor provide a place for smaller events or group meetings. In the last nine years, there have been performances almost every day. The regular Wednesday parties in Lovarda are known to be the biggest university parties in the country. There is also a campus bowling bar.

All students at UD are considered part of the Student Union, which is a democratic body that gives students a say in how their campus is governed and promotes opportunities for students to get involved by joining committees. One example of an active student group is the Committee on International Affairs, which aims to provide information and support both for students interested in studying abroad and for international students arriving at University of Debrecen. The following are some other examples of groups available for students to join.

Housing and Meals

Students are housed on campus in two- or three-person suites in one of 15 residence halls. Each suite has individual accommodations, shared kitchens and toilettes, and common areas. Residence halls also have laundry facilities, a gym, sauna facilities, and internet access.

A meal stipend is given to students for use at cafeterias, cafés, or for groceries. There are several dining halls on campus as well where students can eat cheaply if they do not want to cook in their dorms; meat and vegetarian options are available.

Sports and Recreation

The Athletic Club of the University of Debrecen (DEAC) was established in 1919 with the aim of providing an opportunity for all students to participate in the sport life of the university. The DEAC offers over 20 different courses for students including volleyball, basketball, football, tennis, bowling, fencing, aerobic, swimming, table tennis, bridge, hiking, and sailing. Additionally, the campus Bowling Bar not only offers a four-lane bowling track but also "csocsó"(foosball) and darts.

The University is located in the heart of the Great Forest. Here you can find the Aquaticum Center of Therapies and Baths, which features steam chambers, indoor and open air thermal pools, an indoor swimming pool, sauna and two separate medicinal pools that serve underwater gymnastic exercises and traction bathing. Various exotic tropical plants, caves and bubbles baths, underwater massage, whirlpool baths, a rock climbing wall, waterfalls and 11 different slides and amusement park can be found in the hall. Additional outdoor attractions including the zoo, university botanical garden and Lake Békás are all located within walking distance of the university.

About Your ISEP Coordinator

Debrecen Coordinator

The ISEP Coordinator, Cintia Gunda, has an MA from UD in English, American, and Finnish language and literature. As an undergraduate, she also studied abroad for a semester at the University of Jyvaskyla, another ISEP member institution. Currently, Cintia is a full-time staff person who, because of her experience and excellent language abilities, serves not only as the ISEP Coordinator but also translates, interprets, and organizes foreign delegations' receptions and university leaders' trips abroad.
