- Founded in 1911 as a state normal school for teacher training, MTSU is now the oldest and largest public university in Middle Tennessee. The University has 109 Permanent buildings (3.8 million square feet of space) on 466 acres and Over 22,000 students are enrolled at MTSU.

Residential Life
- ISEP students will be housed on campus in the Honors Dormitory with a shared room, communal bathrooms, and kitchen area.
- Cafeterias are conveniently located around campus and ISEP students will receive a meal plan in addition to campus dollars for purchasing food and groceries.

A free shuttle bus gives students convenient transportation to all areas of campus.
Sports and Activities
- Over 140 student organizations are available to international students.
- The Campus Recreation Center keeps all students active and fit.
- Excursions to different parts of the country, and sometimes other countries, which are available to all international students.
- A wide variety of intramural sports including soccer, flag football, racquetball, volleyball and basketball.
- Classes in yoga, dance, and aerobics
- Facilities include 6 basketball/volleyball courts, 6 racquetball courts, an indoor track, an aerobic room, free weights and machines, an indoor swimming pool with water slide and diving board, outdoor swimming pool and sun deck with sand volleyball courts, indoor and outdoor juice bars, a rock-climbing wall, and a challenge course with Alpine climbing tower.
International Student Programs
- MTSU has two offices that cater to the needs of international students- International Education and Exchange Office (IEEO) and International Programs and Services Office.
- Each month the IEEO plans activities for our international exchange students. Programming varies from month to month, and primarily focuses on Tennessee/ southern culture
- Exchange students meet once a week to talk about their experiences at MTSU or voice any concerns.
- The Student Organization, G.L.O.B.A.L., promotes interest in foreign travel and study within the MTSU community, as well as fostering friendships between international and non-international students.
- 1st Fridays is an event/party for international students that takes place the first Friday of every month.

Message to incoming students:
Hello International Students! Welcome to Middle Tennessee State University. My assistant, Brandon Fisher and I welcome you to the university and the International Education and Exchange Office. The office helps J1 visa students during their stay at MTSU. I have been working with International students for over three years at MTSU. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and study in such exciting regions of the world as Western Europe, East Asia, Caribbean and Latin America. Brandon and I continue to develop new services and exceptional programming to our J1 visa students. This fall semester MTSU provided programming such as a day trip to Memphis, Tennessee, a Broadway series show in Nashville, attended the TN-CIL Leadership Conference, a university “step show” and provided a mid semester dinner for our students with MTSU faculty on campus. (Just to name a few!) We are also dedicated to providing a remarkable academic experience. Students who choose MTSU as their ISEP destination are encouraged to take honor’s level classes in a variety of disciplines and are allowed to stay in the Honor’s dormitories with MTSU’s brightest. We are excited to be a new member and encourage you to consider MTSU as your ISEP host destination.

- The town of Murfreesboro has a population of over 76,977 people
- The MTSU campus in just a few blocks from historic downtown where one can see the beautiful Neoclassical, Italianate and Victorian homes.
- The town square is filled with specialty shops and restaurants.
- Many local taverns and pubs feature live music from various genres.
- The Center for the Arts offers the Celebration Series, a season of entertainment, from September through May in addition to numerous single performances and touring productions.
- The Greenway System is a scenic trail spanning the city that allows walking, bicycling, in-line skating and jogging. There are two canoe access points and four fishing piers. Ten different parks around the city offer other opportunities for sports and leisure.

- Nashville has a thriving art scene including a symphony/orchestra, a ballet, and many museums. It is also known as "The Athens of the South" for its replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park.
- Catch a show at The Ryman Auditorium, "the Mother Church of Country Music" built in 1892 (they have other concerts besides country music!)
- Visit a traditional honky-tonk such as The Stage or Tootsie's Orchid Lounge
