Hints for Researching Courses
There are a few ways for students to search for unit/subject options.

The first is to use the UWS unit search page. This will allow a student to enter a word / subject of interest eg. “Peace” into the search engine and the system will bring up any UWS units that are taught with “Peace” in the unit title.

The second is to search by major and campus. The campus is a particularly important factor to consider when selecting classes because not all subjects are offered at the same campus and the campuses are quite spread out from one another (more info about campuses is under “Location”). From the UWS timetable page, students should select their period of study (choose Autumn or Spring Session - these are backwards in the Southern Hemisphere!) and then check a box for each School they are interested in. This will bring up a broader selection of classes based on UWS Schools (like departments) and will also immediately show which campus each unit is offered on.

Click on the link for any unit code to review a course description.

Academic Notes
Recommended study areas are accounting, business, communications, economics, engineering, environmental science, finance, forensic science, health sciences, hospitality management, human resource development, organisational development, industrial design, international business, international studies, interpreting and translation, law, marketing, natural sciences, traditional Chinese medicine, and sport science.

IMPORTANT: Not all fields of study are offered at all campuses.

For students interested in TV and radio production, the Penrith campus offers state-of-the-art studios and is also the home base for production of the actual station “Television Sydney.”

Some units may have prerequisites (e.g. nursing and psychology). Medicine courses are closed to ISEP participants.

Special ISEP Application Instructions
1) Choose at least four “units” (“classes”) you are interested in taking during your UWS semester with 1-2 backups in case these are not available.

2) Clearly state the campus of preference on the application and be careful to choose only units that are offered on that campus.

3) It is possible (but not recommended) to study units at both Penrith and Parramatta campus during one semester.

Language Notes
Students from non-native English-speaking countries must submit a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum score of 6 in all bands), TOEFL score of 575 (232 CBT/89 IBT), OR Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) at grade C or above or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) at grade B or above. Note: some programs require higher English language proficiency. See http://www.uws.edu.au/international/admissions/english_language_requirement

Program Dates
UWS observes the Southern Hemisphere calendar.

Academic year: February to December; Autumn Session / Semester 1: February to June; Spring Session / Semester 2: July to December. Occasionally students take units that run on a quarter schedule. Quarter 1 runs January – March; Quarter 2 runs April – June; Quarter 3 runs June – September; Quarter 4 runs September – December. UWS observes the Southern Hemisphere calendar.

Housing and Meals
Student residences are available on all UWS Campuses in fully-furnished, self catered apartments. UWS opened new accommodation at the Parramatta campus in January 2009, which offers a range of modern, fully furnished apartments and provides students with weekly social, sporting and cultural activities. UWS also offers a free airport pick-up service for students arriving at Sydney International Airport.

ISEP Direct – students will be sent information on how to apply for either UWS Residences or UWS Village [Parramatta] at the point of application. Accommodation and meal benefits are not included in the ISEP Direct fee.

ISEP Exchange (USA and International students) – students will be requested to complete either UWS Residences or UWS Village [Parramatta] at the point of application. Housing will be assigned to students by UWS. A meal stipend will be paid monthly in advance.

Student Activities
Upon arrival, students participate in a comprehensive orientation program including a customised information session for study abroad and exchange students. The UWS has great university life across all campuses with regular activities and events run through student groups, clubs and societies. A dynamic range of sporting, entertainment and leisure activities are held across all campuses which are mostly free and provide students with a fantastic opportunity to interact with fellow Australian students. Students studying at UWS have access to many of Sydney’s attractions including 40 beaches, bush walks and camping in the Blue Mountains, the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Internships, Service Learning, Volunteering
ISEP participants have the option to undertake an unpaid internship at UWS. The internship is fully supervised by UWS academic staff and provides students with valuable industry experience in an organisation based in Western Sydney, Australia’s third largest regional economy. Internships are a great way to make valuable contacts and gain a competitive edge in the job market. Internship applications include;
  • A Resume (Curriculum Vitae)
  • Two letters of reference with the contact details of the referees (ISEP referee reports are acceptable)
  • A statement outlining the area of preferred interest for the work placement

ISEP-Direct
ISEP has developed the Australia-Direct program to provide students with competitively priced fee-paid study abroad options in Australia. The program is distinct from other ISEP-Direct programs; the program has its own application form and placement procedures. Some Australia-Direct institutions offer more than one fee based on different housing arrangements (tuition-only, tuition and single-room, tuition and shared-room). Meals are not included in the program. Students are also responsible for the application fee, travel costs and personal expenses. Students selecting the tuition-only option are also responsible for the cost of housing. For more information go to the ISEP-Direct Australia page.

Profile
The University of Western Sydney (UWS) is a modern, progressive university with more than 100 study areas, over 2000 staff, and about 36,000 students from Australia and around the world. The UWS has six campuses spread across Greater Western Sydney in Bankstown, Blacktown / Nirimba, Campbelltown, Hawkesbury, Penrith, and Parramatta. While each campus offers a unique learning environment, they all share the same friendly, communal atmosphere that makes UWS a great place to study and make friends. Exchange and study abroad students at UWS can study at any campus depending on course selection.

Location
At UWS, many breathtaking sights are only a quick ride away. Take the bus, train, or ferry to the heart of this cosmopolitan city, and immerse yourself in the world-famous Sydney Harbour, some amazing shopping, and restaurants offering cuisine from all over the world. Although ISEP students are welcome to study at any UWS campus, it is estimated that the Parramatta and Penrith campuses will be most popular.

Paramatta (pop. 148,000; student pop. 9,293) is the closest of the six campus locations to downtown Sydney (only 24 km away—a short train or Rivercat ferry ride takes you straight into the Harbour). However, besides its proximity to some of Australia’s most iconic sites, Paramatta is also a diverse and thriving urban centre in its own right. It is the second largest central business district in Sydney and the sixth largest in Australia. Parramatta is also recognized for its rich historical background and great colonial architecture, as well as its multicultural community, and wide variety of cafes, shopping, sporting and outdoor activities, and nightlife options.

Penrith (pop. 170,000; student pop. 7,985) is a city located on the spectacular Nepean River at the base of the Heritage-listed Blue Mountains. Unsurprisingly, it is a paradise for anyone who likes the outdoors, offering abundant parkands along the river banks, bicycling and hiking trails (a ten-minute train ride takes you into the Blue Mountains), extensive boating activities (from canoeing to white-water rafting!), and gorgeous scenic views. Penrith also offers all the modern conveniences and social activities of any city (shopping, sports facilities, and entertainment options). It takes 1-1 ˝ hours to get from Penrith into downtown Sydney by rail or car.
