Most scholarships listed below are for US students. International
students should talk with the local ISEP Coordinator about study abroad
and travel grants that may be available in your country.
US students should ask your study abroad advisor and financial aid officer what aid is available. Federal and most institutional financial aid can be used for ISEP programs, and your financial aid award may be adjusted to cover travel costs and additional fees. Your university may also have specific internal scholarships reserved for study abroad.

Visit the study abroad and development offices at your institution for information about other sources of scholarships for study abroad. Local service groups, foundations or corporations may also offer scholarships for study abroad.
Study Abroad ScholarshipsBlakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study
Only available to American citizens and permanent residents of the United States who have a college degree and plan to use an Asian language in their career.
Boren Awards for International Study
Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Preference is given to geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.
Bridging Scholarships
For study abroad in Japan. Undergraduate students of any major are eligible to apply. The awards are typically $2,500 for semester-long programs or $4,000 for academic-year programs. In addition, Morgan Stanley Japan will award two $7,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who will be studying abroad in Japan during the 2011-2012 academic year and who have an interest in economics and international finance. The deadline for applications for the Fall 2011 semester or the 2011-12 academic year is April 8, 2011.
BUTEX North American Scholarships 2011
BUTEX is now accepting applications for its North American Scholarship Program 2011-12. The Scholarship is open to all undergraduate ISEP participants currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a study abroad or exchange place at University of Bradford, University of Central Lancashire, University of Chester, University of East London, University of Plymouth, University of Strathclyde, University of Sunderland, or University of Ulster. Your study abroad or exchange must take place during the academic year 2011-12 and your place must be for a minimum of one semester. The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university.
Freeman-ASIA Program Scholarship
Foundation and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), aims to increase the number of U.S. undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need. Award amounts vary from $3,000 for a summer program to $5,000 for a semester/quarter program to $7,000 for an academic year program.
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
Scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Gilman Scholarships
The Gilman International Scholarship Program is now accepting online applications for US undergraduates studying abroad this Spring. The program provides awards to students receiving a Federal Pell Grant funding at a two year or four year college. Over 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year by the program. Those who apply are also able eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement for a total possible award of up to $8,000. The application deadline is October 5th.
Itoh Scholarship Foundation
A non-profit charitable institute that provides provides financial assistance for the study of the Japanese language at Japanese universities.
Japan Student Services Organization
Available for qualified international students already accepted by Japanese universities or graduate schools for a semester or year.
Morgan Stanley Japan Scholarships
Awards two $7,500 scholarships to US students who will be studying in Japan for the academic year to augment its contribution to the Bridging Project for Study Abroad in Japan. Eligible students include juniors and seniors at US universities with an interest in economics and international finance who have been accepted for study in Japan. Winners may also be considered for internships at Morgan Stanley Japan's Tokyo headquarters.
National Security Education Program
Awards usually cover the full cost of study and travel abroad. Created by Congress in 1991, NSEP was intended to encourage American students to study less commonly taught languages and cultures, especially in nations considered to be of interest to national security. The program also aspires to increase the number of Americans qualified for government service and international diplomacy. After graduation, student recipients are required to work for an office or agency of the Federal Government involved in national security affairs or in higher education.
Rotary Foundation
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships of up to $26,000 provide funding for one academic year of study in another country. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion. ISEP students studying in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish or Swedish may qualify for the Cultural Ambassador Scholarship.
ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship
This scholarship program supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields. See flyer for details.
