Central Michigan University
Student population: approximately 20,000
Location: Mount Pleasant, Michigan - To the north and west are lakes, streams, ski resorts, beaches and magnificent wilderness areas. To the south and east lie rich farmland and larger metropolitan areas with museums, theaters, art fairs, and shopping.
Official TOEFL score from ETS is required. May apply to Bridge program if all other requirements are met.
- 550 TOEFL or 6.5 IELTS may enroll in a full-time regular academic undergraduate program
- 500-549 TOEFL or 5.5 IELTS may enroll in 9 hours of English language courses and 6-9 hours of regular undergraduate courses
- Below 500 or no TOEFL score may apply to Bridge program if all other requirements are met.
Regular academic courses will receive letter grades on a Central Michigan University transcript.
ESL courses will be listed on a transcript as credit/no credit. The University will also give students a separate document with letter grades for the ESL courses taken.

New Mexico State University
Student population: 16,000
Location: Las Cruces, New Mexico – A vibrant bilingual community with a small city atmosphere but big city amenities.
Official TOEFL score from ETS, an institutional TOEFL report, or IELTS are preferred for non-degree undergraduate admission, but alternate ESL assessments will be considered. NMSU reserves the right to require ESL placement testing during new student orientation.
- 600 TOEFL or IELTS 6/6.5 may enroll in a full-time regular undergraduate academic program in non-degree status.
- 500-600 TOEFL, or IELTS 5/5.5 may enroll in 3-6 hours of English as a Second Language plus 6-9 hours of regular academic classes. Test upon arrival will determine the combination of language and academic coursework
All regular academic courses receive letter grades (A-F) on official NMSU transcripts.
ESL courses receive letter grades (A-F, or S/U [satisfactory/unsatisfactory]) on official NMSU transcripts. The University will provide a supplemental certificate for any ESL course graded S/U that will show the level of performance based on a letter grade (A-F).

Old Dominion University
Student population: 22,000
Location: Norfolk, Virginia – Popular Atlantic beaches and historic colonial Williamsburg are nearby.
Official TOEFL score from ETS, an institutional TOEFL report, or IELTS are accepted. Those submitting an institutional TOEFL report will be retested upon arrival (retesting fee of $50 must be paid by applicant).
- 550 TOEFL or 6.5 IELTS and above may enroll in a full-time regular undergraduate academic program
- 500-550 TOEFL or 5.5 IELTS may enroll in 8 hours of English language courses and 6 hours of regular undergraduate classes
Students receive an official Old Dominion University transcript for regular academic courses. At the completion of the term, students will receive an English Language Center certificate and a final evaluation with letter grades for their non-credit ESL courses. Students may request an official Old Dominion University transcript of their ESL courses.

San Jose State University
Student population: 32,000
Location: San Jose, California - South of the San Francisco Bay in the heart of downtown San Jose. There are a great many museums, bike and hiking trails and recreational facilities in and around the campus. The Pacific Ocean is only 30 minutes away by car.
Official TOEFL score from ETS to participate in a full-time regular academic undergraduate program. IELTS accepted for combined or full-time English language programs.
- 500 official TOEFL may enroll in a full-time regular academic undergraduate program. Engineering students must have 550+ TOEFL
- 500 institutional TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS may enroll in 8-10 hours of English language courses and 6 units of regular undergraduate courses.
- Less than 500 on the official or institutional TOEFL (less than 6.5 on IELTS) may enroll in 18 hours of English language courses and a 1-unit “activity” courses in the regular university (Communication Studies workshops, Introduction to Art course, Kinesiology courses, Music Ensembles).
Students receive an official San José State University transcript with grades for the regular academic courses. Students who take English language courses will receive a certificate of completion from Studies in American Language (SAL) and a SAL transcript with letter grades for their non-credit ESL courses.

Tennessee Technological University
Student population: approximately 10,400
Location: Cookeville, Tennessee - Although it's located in some of Tennessee's most beautiful countryside, the campus is only a little more than an hour from three of the state's metro areas -- 82 miles east of Nashville, 109 miles west of Knoxville and 96 miles north of Chattanooga
With an enrollment of over 10,400 students and more than 50% of classes with 20 students or less, strong faculty/student relationships are a hallmark of a TTU educational experience.
Tennessee Tech is known as Tennessee’s technological university, but houses six strong academic divisions -- the College of Agricultural and Human Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Engineering, and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Extended Education.
Minimum 450-495 TOEFL, 5.0 IELTS, First Certificate CAMBRIDGE, 520 TOEIC, Pre-2 EIKEN, 64-67 MELAB, 380-429 SAT verbal, 16-17 ACT English may enroll in 3 hours of English language (ESL 1010 or ESL 1020) courses and 9 hours of regular undergraduate classes.

University of Idaho
Student population: 18,000
Location: Moscow, Idaho – Moscow offers students the best of the USA -- big city access to arts, cultural events, festivals, academics and recreation with friendly, small town hospitality and safety. Moscow hosts a number of festivals including the Renaissance Fair, Mardi Gras, Rendezvous in the Park, and the world-class Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.
An official TOEFL score from ETS is required. If the TOEFL score is below 525, students will be tested upon arrival to determine their level in the American Language and Culture Program (ALCP). Students with a TOEFL score of 525 may enroll in full-time regular academic undergraduate classes. Students with a TOEFL score between 500 – 524 and test into level 5 of the U of I American Language & Cultural Program may enroll in 10 hours of English courses and 6 hours of regular undergraduate classes. Students with a TOEFL score between 450– 499 are eligible for the academic year-only program. Participants enroll in full-time (18-20 hours per week) in the English language course with the U of I American Language & Cultural Program during the first semester. With the recommendation of the ALCP Director, students having passed the ALCP level 4 during the fall semester, may enroll in 10 hours of English language courses and 6 hours of regular undergraduate classes during the spring semester. Students taking regular academic courses and/or ESL courses will receive letter grades (A-F) on university transcripts.

University of Montana
(Only the combined ESL and academic course program is available)
Student population: approximately 13,560
Location: Missoula, Montana – A small but cosmopolitan city in close proximity to Glacier and Yellowstone National Park.
Official TOEFL score from ETS or an institutional TOEFL report are accepted.
- 480-499 TOEFL Academic year or semester program. Upon the recommendation of the Director of the English Language Institute and the instructors, students may enroll in 16-18 semester hours of English language institute classes and one appropriate academic class. This class will be selected based on the student’s language ability and interests, and may not be in the student’s academic major.
- 450-479 TOEFL Academic year only program. Participants enroll in full-time (20 hours per week) English Language courses during the first semester. With the recommendation of the Director of English Language Institute and the class instructors, students with a minimum TOEFL of 480 may enroll in 16-18 hours of English language institute classes and one appropriate academic class. This class will be selected based on the student’s language ability and interests, and may not be in the student’s academic major. Students who score 500 or above on the TOEFL test after the first semester take 3 credits of ESL and enroll in 9-12 credits of regular undergraduate courses during the second semester.
Students who combine ELI courses and one academic course will receive a noncredit ELI certificate with grades and an evaluation of each class with information about the content of the class and instructors’ comments. In addition, they will receive an official university transcript with a grade for their academic course. Students who are admitted to the university, and combine UM ESL and academic courses will receive letter grades on their university transcripts.

University of Wisconsin, La Crosse

Utah State University
Student population: 22,800
Location: Logan, Utah - 90 miles north of Salt Lake City. Wonderful opportunities for recreational activities such as skiing, snow boarding, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and kayaking in Logan Canyon.
Official TOEFL score from ETS, an institutional TOEFL report, or IELTS are accepted. Those submitting an institutional TOEFL report will be retested upon arrival (retesting fee of $50 must be paid by applicant).
- 500 TOEFL, or IELTS 5.0 may enroll in a full-time regular academic undergraduate program up to 18 hours of academic coursework. Students may also take Intensive English classes at no extra charge, but must pay an onsite testing fee of $50 for accurate English level placement
- 475-499 TOEFL or IELTS 4.5-4.99 Academic year or semester program. Upon the recommendation of the Director of the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) and the class instructor, students may enroll in 11 semester hours of English language institute classes and one appropriate academic class. This class will be selected based on the student’s language ability and interests, provided any course prerequisites have been completed
- 450-474 TOEFL Academic year only program. Enroll in full-time (18 credit hours per week) English Language courses during the first semester. With the recommendation of the Director of English Language Institute and academic advisor, students may enroll in a full-time academic semester the second term or enroll in a combination of Intensive English classes and appropriate academic classes, provided any course prerequisites have been completed
Participants completing ESL courses and/or regular academic courses will receive letter grades on an official transcript issued by Utah State University.
ESL courses are credit-bearing courses similar to all academic coursework completed at the Utah State.

The ISEP Central Office in Washington, DC serves as a resource to the ISEP Coordinators at each university.
