Sites that Accept US Sophomores

Definition: “Sophomores” refer to students who have successfully completed the equivalent of one year’s worth of credit at the university level by the time they begin their exchange or study-abroad program.

The list below includes all international member institutions accepting qualified sophomores. Sites marked with a check in the right column are recommended for sophomores.

When advising students applying for an exchange or study-abroad program during their sophomore year, please keep in mind the following:

Academic Considerations

Does the student have the pre-requisites for the courses available at the host institution?

English Language Sites

English-Speaking Countries: Note that in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom students specialize earlier in their academic career; U.S. students planning to study abroad in their sophomore year should consider first-year courses/modules or second year courses/modules for which they have the specific pre-requisites.
Non-English speaking countries offering courses in English (Finland, Korea, the Netherlands, Sweden, etc.): Area studies and other programs designed especially for visiting international students are usually appropriate for sophomores. Courses in other fields are often at advanced, specialized levels, and thus less appropriate.

Countries where the language of instruction is not English

Most sites that offer intensive language programs are appropriate for sophomores.
Sophomores with advanced language skills (e.g. AP courses + higher level language courses in college) may select any of the sites listed below that accept sophomores.

Personal Considerations

In many countries (especially in continental Europe), students do not begin university studies until they are 20 or even older.
Living conditions may require a higher degree of independence than U.S. campus housing (e.g. shared apartments or rooms in a city, sometimes involving commuting by public transportation), and in many countries students are responsible for shopping for and cooking their own food.

Placement Considerations

Students applying for ISEP after completing only one or two semesters of college-level work (often in survey courses where professors do not get to know students well enough to write recommendations) may be at a disadvantage when applying for sites with limited openings. Flexibility with regard to sites is recommended.

Argentina	Univ Blas Pascal	Sophomores can apply for the ISEP Direct Summer program. Sophomores can also apply for the semester program and can take basic courses in many fields of study as long as they meet the pre-requisites.
Argentina	Univ del Salvador	Sophomores may enroll in the ISEP Direct Cultural Immersion Program (Programa de Inmersión Cultural - PIC). Regular courses are closed to sophomores except those having completed PIC. Only students who have no more than 2-3 semesters of Spanish are eligible for the PIC.

Costa Rica	Univ Nacional	Sophomores can apply for the ISEP-Direct Summer program (minimum requirement: 2 semesters of college-level Spanish or equivalent) and for the regular semester. Sophomores have access to courses in most fields of study as long as they meet the pre-requisites..

Finland	Abo Akademi Univ - Abo	Sophomores can take Finnish-Swedish Studies and some other basic course programs as long as they meet the pre-requisites.
Finland	Turku School of Economics	Sophomores have access to a good selection of basic-level courses, especially in marketing and international business, as long as they meet the pre-requisites.
Finland	Univ of Eastern Finland - Joensuu	Sophomores can take courses in Educational Sciences, the International Study Program on Karelia, Russia and the Baltic Area, and possibly some other programs as long as they meet the pre-requisites.

Germany	Justus-Liebig-Univ Giessen	Sophomores have access to courses in most fields of study as long as they meet the prerequisites.
Germany	Katholische Univ Eichstätt	Eichstaett can accept students who are in their second year of studies.
Germany	Marburg Universität	ONLY on ISEP-Direct options. ISEP-Direct Semester Program IUSP - language and culture program. ISEP-Direct Summer Program: Political Science, Economics, Cultural Studies plus German Language.

Japan	Chukyo Univ	Sophomores must be able to demonstrate a significant interest in Japan through coursework and other activities. At least two semesters of university-level Japanese is required.
Japan	Kansai Gaidai Univ	Sophomores must be able to demonstrate a significant interest in Japan through coursework and other activities. Placements are limited and only one semester in length. One semester of university-level Japanese required. (Site is currently closed on ISEP Exchange)

Japan	Nihon Univ - Mishima	Sophomores must be able to demonstrate a significant interest in Japan through coursework and other activities. At least two semesters of university-level Japanese is recommended; two is required; four is preferred.
