Become a Member
ISEP invites applications for membership from colleges and
universities that:
- Are regionally accredited (U.S. institutions) or recognized by their
government or ministry of education (non-U.S. institutions)
- Are seriously committed to internationalization and likely to make
substantial use of ISEP
- Are willing to dedicate at least one staff member to serve as an
on-campus ISEP Coordinator to advise outgoing and incoming exchange
students
- Are looking for a wide range of education abroad destinations for
their students (see notes below)
- Will add to the geographic diversity of ISEP destinations and/or
increase ISEP’s ability to meet current members’ demand
for a particular region or type of institution
- Offers support services and a broad range of academic programs that
meet the needs of incoming students from other countries
- Are interested in the campus diversity that incoming international
students bring (institutions interested in only sending out students
should consider the Affiliate
program)
Notes for prospective U.S. institutions
Although all members of ISEP participate in reciprocal exchanges,
some sites have more space available than others. The best chances
of exchange placements for students wishing to study in English are
in Northern and Central Europe and in Korea and Thailand; for students
with knowledge of the target language, there are opportunities in
Europe and Latin America; language courses (mostly intermediate-level)
as well as immersion programs are available. Offerings in China and
Japan are expanding. The UK has very limited exchange openings but
there are several ISEP-Direct
options in the UK as well as in Australia and New Zealand.
Notes
for prospective International institutions
Exchanges with the US: All ISEP members in the
US and Puerto Rico participate in reciprocal exchanges. All
are open to undergraduate (bachelor level) students; a few also accept
master’s level students. Requests for placement at institutions
on the East or West Coast exceed the availability of space.
Exchanges with other International Institutions:
Institutions participating in these exchanges are identified International-to-International
list; the United Kingdom has very limited exchange openings but
there are several ISEP-Direct options offered.
The Membership Application
Process
- Colleges and universities interested in ISEP membership are reviewed
biannually in September and February. Interested institutions should
begin the process by completing the Prospective Member Information
(PMI) form. This form may be submitted via email
or mailed to ISEP. Please also provide a recent course catalog
or other materials describing the academic program of the institution.

- If the information submitted shows that there is a match between
the institution's needs and interests and the services that ISEP provides,
ISEP will ask the institution to provide further details regarding
the practical implementation of ISEP exchanges, have the Agreement
and Terms of Participation governing exchanges among ISEP members
signed by the chief academic officer of the institution and submit
a $500 membership application fee, refundable if the institution is
not invited to membership.
- If the additional information shows that procedures for the implementation
of exchanges are in place, ISEP will invite the institution to become
a member and countersign the Agreement and Terms of Participation.
- The final step in the process is a visit to the institution by a
member of the ISEP staff. The site visit serves as an introduction
of the ISEP process, services, and programs to the international program
staff, deans, faculty, administrators, and students. The new member
institution is expected to cover the cost of the visit.
- Annual membership dues are invoiced each year in June. Download:
